Elster Registration with Personal ID and Ausweisapp2 - Step by Step Tutorial

New Elster

Before you can use Elster to file your tax return, you need to register for an account. The whole process is easy and I will show you step by step how we can do that by using your personal id and ausweis app.

First, go to the Elster website and click the Benutzer Konto erstellen or create an account.

Now you need to select the authentication method you would like to use to log in to the website. This is a way for the finanzamt to know you are who you say you are, and for that, you can use one of the 4 methods.

A digital signature or Zertifikat Datei would be the most secure way to login to your elster account. You can check this video if you want to know more. But this process can take a few days. But if you already have a personal ID with the online function, you can select the option Personalausweis and avoid this delay.

To authenticate with the card, you will need additionally either a physical card reader or the ausweis app2 on your mobile with the NFC functionality. Now to login you need the Ausweisapp2 on both your computer and your phone and synced with each other.

Now click on the option Login mit Ausweis app2, This will open the Ausweisapp on your desktop.

Now open the ausweis app on your phone and place the ID under the top section of the phone. This will give you a 6 digit pin that you can enter in the desktop app to complete verification and login to your elster account.

Now you end up on your home page where you can make your tax declaration. And to do that, you can watch this video where I explain step by step how to do the tax declaration with elster and get your money back.
